When my first child was born in 2004, I began cloth diapering with covers and prefolds. I liked the versatility and economy of them; I could use one cover over and over again and only had to buy and store a few. With the prefolds I could add or lessen absorption easily and even use them for other tasks around the house.
However, over time & after dealing with skin irritations in my son and now my new daughter, I started looking for something that would wick the moisture away from their sensitive skin and keep them feeling dry. I tried pocket diapers.
They were great for providing the protection that I wanted for their skin, and in addition to prefolds I could use other materials such as microfiber that are not meant to be kept against the child's skin. There was one major drawback, though: since the inner layer would stay slightly damp, the whole cover had to be replaced with every changing. This meant that I would have to purchase and store more diapers . . . or come up with a solution.
First I tried placing a stay dry layer in the regular covers, but the liners would never stay in place. I searched for other possibilities. I wanted a diaper cover that could act like a pocket diaper but not have to be washed at every diaper change. When I could not find anything that worked that way, I put the pen to the paper.
After much trial and error, the Hiney Lineys system was born.
